What is a typical fetal weight at 32 weeks?

How accurate is the estimated fetal weight on an ultrasound?

It can be 10 to 15% off either way, more so near term. It's worked out from the head, tummy and thigh measurements, not weighed.

My baby is measuring below the 10th percentile. What does that mean?

It's the cut-off clinics use for "small for gestational age". Many of these babies are simply small. Your team usually plans more scans to follow growth and may check the fluid and blood flow. Below the 3rd percentile, they usually want to check soon.

My baby is measuring big. Will I need an induction or a cesarean?

Not necessarily. Estimates are less exact near term and can be 10 to 15% off. Talk it through with your midwife or doctor, who will look at the whole picture before suggesting any change to your plan.

My fundal height says small but the scan says my baby's size is typical. Which is right?

The scan is the more exact of the two. The tape changes with the baby's position, the fluid and your build. Mention both at your next appointment.

Is my baby small or big for dates?

Clinics call a baby small for gestational age (small for dates) when the estimated weight is below the 10th percentile, and large for gestational age (big for dates) above the 90th. Many of these babies are simply small or big. Enter the week and weight from your scan to see where yours sits, and add a fundal height to compare the tape with the scan.

Can I convert my baby's weight to pounds and ounces?
