What do Braxton Hicks feel like?
Your belly tightens and goes hard for a short while, then relaxes. They're usually painless or mildly uncomfortable, come at irregular times and don't build up.
When do Braxton Hicks start?
Often in the second trimester, and many people notice them more in the last weeks of pregnancy. Some never notice them at all.
How can I tell practice contractions from labor?
Labor contractions keep coming, get stronger, last longer (about 30–70 seconds) and come closer together. They often start in the low back and move to the front. Practice contractions stay irregular, don't build and often ease with rest, a drink or a change of position.
I'm under 37 weeks and having tightenings. What should I do?
If they come regularly, get stronger or painful, or come with low back pain, pelvic pressure, period-like cramps or a show, call your midwife or maternity unit now. Don't wait for a pattern.
Do Braxton Hicks ease with rest?
Often, yes. Rest, a drink or a change of position can settle them. Labor contractions keep coming whatever you do.
What is the 5-1-1 rule?
Contractions every 5 minutes, lasting about 1 minute, for 1 hour. Many units use it as a rule of thumb for a first baby. Call sooner if this isn't your first baby, you live far away, or your unit told you to.
Is losing the mucus plug a sign of labor?
A show (a pink or brown plug of mucus) can mean labor is near, but it can come days before. Before 37 weeks, call your midwife or maternity unit. Heavier or bright red bleeding is not a show: call now.
My waters may have broken but I have no contractions. What now?
Call your midwife or maternity unit now. Note the time and the color of the fluid. Green, brown or smelly fluid means you'll be asked to come in straight away.
Can back pain be a sign of labor?
Yes. Labor contractions often start in the low back and wrap around to the front. A dull low backache that doesn't go away before 37 weeks can be a sign of preterm labor: call now.
