What is the 5-1-1 rule?

Contractions every 5 minutes or closer, each lasting about 1 minute, for 1 hour. Many US units use it as the time to call for a first baby.

What is the difference between 5-1-1 and 4-1-1?

4-1-1 asks for contractions every 4 minutes instead of 5. Both ask for about 1 minute long, for 1 hour. Use whichever your unit gave you.

Do I time contractions from the start or the end?

From the start of one to the start of the next. How long each one lasts is timed separately, from its start to its end.

What if my contractions are 5 minutes apart but shorter than a minute?

The tool shows the gap as met and the length as not yet. Keep timing. Call if they get longer and stronger, or sooner if this isn't your first baby or you're unsure.

Should I wait the full hour if this isn't my first baby?

No. Later labors are often quicker. Call sooner, or when your unit told you to.

My waters broke but contractions haven't started. What should I do?

Call your midwife or maternity unit now. Note the time and the color of the fluid.

I'm under 37 weeks and having regular tightenings. What should I do?

Call your midwife or maternity unit now. Don't wait for a pattern.

Can I enter times after midnight?

Yes. The tool reads the times as one run, so 23:58, 00:03 and 00:08 are 5 minutes apart.

What if my hospital gave me different numbers?

Choose "My unit's advice" and set how far apart, how long and for how long. Their advice always comes first.
