When should I call the hospital about contractions?
Update your provider as contractions move to around 5–7 minutes apart and get stronger. Go in (calling ahead) in active labour: contractions 3–5 minutes apart and 45–90 seconds long, as in the 5-1-1 rule (or 4-1-1): about 5 (or 4) minutes apart, lasting about 1 minute, for 1 hour. Leave earlier if you have a long drive. Call immediately if your water breaks, there’s heavy bleeding, or movements are reduced.
What does "timing contractions" mean?
Timing measures frequency (from the start of one contraction to the start of the next) and duration (how long each one lasts). Time 3–4 contractions over 30–60 minutes to see a pattern; the 5-1-1 rule looks for that pattern lasting 1 hour.
How does travel time change when I should leave?
Use the same adjustments as above: with a 60–90 minute drive, head out when contractions are about 6–7 minutes apart; with a 45–60 minute drive, at about 5–6 minutes apart; with a 20–30 minute drive, follow the usual 3–5 minute pattern. If you’ve had a fast labour before, this isn’t your first baby, or traffic is unpredictable, leave earlier still.
What if my water breaks but contractions aren’t regular?
If your membranes rupture, contact your provider and plan to go. Hospitals usually advise assessment even without regular contractions.
What should I pack in a quick hospital bag?
Pack ID, insurance, phone charger, clothes, basic toiletries, comfort items, and any important medical notes. Keep them accessible in the car.
