How many kicks should I feel per day?
There’s no exact daily number, but most providers recommend **at least 10 movements within 2 hours** during a baby’s usual active period.
When should I start using a kick counter?
Kick counts are usually recommended from around **28 weeks** (third trimester), though some may begin earlier.
Do all movements count as kicks?
Yes — kicks, rolls, jabs, and strong stretches all count. Small hiccups generally do **not** count as kicks.
What if I don’t reach 10 kicks in 2 hours?
Don’t wait to try again later or the next day. If you get **fewer than 10 movements**, or movements feel **reduced, slowed or different** from your baby’s usual pattern, contact your midwife or maternity unit **the same day — straight away**.
Does baby movement slow down near the due date?
Movements may feel **different** (stronger rolls instead of sharp kicks), but they should **not stop or decrease**. A sudden drop is always a red flag.
When is the best time of day to count?
Evening or after meals often works best since babies tend to be more active then. Pick a time you can repeat daily.
Can kick counting really detect problems?
Formal kick counting has **not been proven** to prevent stillbirth on its own. What matters most is knowing your baby’s **usual pattern**: reduced or changed movement can be an early sign that a baby is unwell, so if you notice it, contact your midwife or maternity unit the same day rather than relying on a count.
