What are the 5-1-1 and 4-1-1 rules?

They are simple timing rules some hospitals use. **5-1-1** usually means contractions about **every 5 minutes**, **1 minute long**, for **1 hour**. **4-1-1** is the same idea but with **4-minute intervals** instead of 5.

Why does the tool need exactly three contractions?

It uses three contractions to calculate an **average interval** and **average duration**. That is enough to see if your current pace is near the rule without requiring a big list of times.

What does “How long like this” mean?

It is roughly how many **minutes** contractions have been coming at this **similar pace** (interval and length). If this is under 60 minutes, the hour check is not met, even if the spacing and duration look like the rule.

What does “Too early” mean in this tool?

It means not enough of the three checks are met yet (spacing, duration and an hour at this pace). It suggests **keeping timing and getting ready**, not that nothing is happening.

Why does it sometimes say “Call your provider” instead of “Time to head in”?

If **two** out of the three checks are met, the tool treats you as **close** to the rule and suggests calling your provider to discuss next steps and prepare to go, instead of automatically saying “go now”.
