What should I do in early labor at home?

Rest, eat and drink little and often, take a warm shower or bath, and time a few contractions every hour. Tell your birth partner and anyone looking after children or pets.

When should I call the maternity unit with my first baby?

Many units ask you to call when contractions come about every 5 minutes, last about a minute, and have done so for an hour. Call sooner if you live far away, your unit told you to, or you're unsure.

Is it different for a second baby?

Yes. Labor often moves faster when you've given birth before, so call as soon as contractions are regular, without waiting an hour.

My waters have broken but I have no contractions. What now?

Call your midwife or maternity unit now. Wear a pad, not a tampon, and note the time and the color of the fluid.

Can I have a bath in early labor?

A warm bath or shower can ease early contractions. If your waters have broken, ask your maternity unit first.

Early labor has gone on for over a day. Is it OK to call about that?

Yes. Call if you can't rest, can't cope with the pain, or just want to talk it through.

What should I take with me?

Your bag, your maternity notes, your phone and its charger, and the car seat fitted in the car.

I'm under 37 weeks and having contractions. What should I do?

Call your midwife or maternity unit now. Don't wait for a pattern.

Is my data saved?

No. Nothing is stored or sent.
