When should I pack my hospital bag?

By about 36 weeks, earlier if you're expecting twins. Have the car seat fitted by then too.

What does the hospital provide?

It varies between hospitals and countries. Many units ask you to bring maternity pads, diapers, a towel and your own medicines. Ask your maternity unit what they provide.

How many pads and how much underwear should I pack?

Two packs of maternity pads and 5 or more pairs of high-waisted underwear for a stay of 1–2 nights. Pack a third pack of pads and extra underwear for a longer stay.

Should I bring my medicines?

Yes, in their packs, with the doses written down. Many hospitals ask you to bring your own.

What should my birth partner pack?

Clothes for a long day, a wash bag, snacks and water, a simple meal, a charged power bank and charger, and swimwear if a water birth is possible.

What does my baby need to go home?

A rear-facing car seat fitted in the car, a going-home outfit with one more layer than you, a hat and a blanket. No bulky snowsuit under the harness.

Do I need a car seat to leave the hospital?

You need one to drive your baby home. Practice fitting it before the day.

Is my list saved?

Yes, on this device only. Nothing is sent.

What if labor starts before I've finished packing?

Go. Someone can bring the bag later. Call your midwife or maternity unit now if any of the warning signs on this page apply.
