How accurate is a birth weight prediction?
A model can only give a range. Half of babies fall in the narrow range the tool shows, and 8 in 10 in the wider one. It isn't a prediction for your own baby.
What is an average birth weight at 40 weeks?
About 3.45 kg (7 lb 10 oz) for a first baby of an average-sized mother, with half of babies between about 3.2 and 3.7 kg.
Are boys heavier than girls at birth?
On average, yes, by about 160 g at the same week.
Are second babies bigger?
Often, by about 110 g compared with a first baby.
Does the father's height affect birth weight?
A little, through the baby's genes, but it isn't part of this model. It uses the birth mother's height and weight only.
How much do babies gain in the last weeks?
Roughly 150 to 200 g a week from 37 to 40 weeks, then a little less.
Can I use this for twins?
No. Twins grow differently and are followed on their own charts.
My scan says my baby is big or small. Should I go by this instead?
No. Go by your care team, who know how your baby is growing.
Can I see it in pounds and ounces?
Yes. Every figure is shown in both kg and lb and oz, and you can enter the mother's height and weight in either unit.
