What is prodromal labor?

Real, often uncomfortable contractions that come for hours, sometimes in a fairly regular pattern, and then ease off and stop without labor going on. It is common in the last weeks of pregnancy.

How long does prodromal labor last?

Each episode can last a few hours, often in the evening or at night. It can come back for several days, and some people never notice it.

What is the difference between prodromal labor and Braxton Hicks?

Braxton Hicks are usually irregular, often mild tightenings that fade with rest. Prodromal contractions are real contractions that can hurt and feel regular for a while before they ease off.

How do I know if it is prodromal labor or real labor?

Time a run of contractions for about an hour. In labor they keep getting closer, longer and stronger. In prodromal labor the pattern thins out and stops. Call your maternity unit whenever you are unsure.

Should I time prodromal contractions?

Time a run for about an hour when they start, then stop if they fade and rest. Start again when they pick up. You do not need to log every contraction.
