Can contractions be 5 minutes apart and not painful?
Yes. Early labor contractions can feel like a tightening or mild cramps, and Braxton Hicks are often painless. What tells them apart is whether they get longer, stronger and closer together over an hour or two, and whether they keep going when you rest.
Are painless contractions every 5 minutes a sign of labor?
They can be early labor, Braxton Hicks or prodromal labor. Time them for an hour, note how long each lasts and how strong it feels, and see whether the pattern builds or fades. Call your maternity unit whenever you are unsure.
What if contractions are every 2 or 3 minutes but not painful?
Call your maternity unit. Contractions that come this close together are worth a call whatever they feel like, especially if this is not your first baby or your waters have broken.
Should I call if I have regular contractions before 37 weeks that don't hurt?
Yes. Regular tightenings before 37 weeks can be a sign of premature labor even when they are painless, so call your maternity unit or labor ward straight away.
Why are my contractions every 5 minutes but I am not dilating?
In early labor the cervix softens and thins before it opens, which can take many hours or days, especially with a first baby. Only an examination shows how far it has opened. Ask your midwife what to watch for and when to call again.
